NONADA PUTS TOGETHER IN A CD MPB´S CLASSICS, WITH MUSICIANS TUTTY MORENO, RODOLFO STROETER, NAILOR “PROVETA”, TECO CARDOSO AND ANDRÉ MEHMARI
Nonada, the word that starts the romance Grande Sertão, Veredas, by Guimarães Rosa, was chosen by the musicians to name the CD released by Biscoito Fino. But let it be know, this work is not to be considered frivolous at all. On the contrary, it is the result of a union started in the beginning of 1998, with the recording of the CD Forças D´Alma, joining the drummer Tutty Moreno, the producer and bass player Rodolfo Stroeter, the pianist André Mehmari, and the saxophone and clarinet player Nailor “Proveta”. Nonada gained another member: saxophone and flute player Teco Cardoso.
Nonada, for these artists, is the search for the traditional Brazilian popular music and all its possibilities of expansion to a result that results in its freedom of expression and greater improvisation. They recreate the music of some of the pillars of Brazilian popular music, like Dorival Caymmi, Ary Barroso, Baden Powell, Moacir Santos, Hermeto Pascoal, in traditional language of each composition respected in its essence and, at the same time, reinvented.
By Caymmi, O Vento e Não Tem Solução was chosen. On the first, a creative harmonization by the piano of André Mehmari adds to the introspective atmosphere created by Tutty Moreno and Rodolfo Stroeter that call upon Teco Cardoso on a solitary flight through his alto saxophone. On the classic song, Não Tem Solução, Nailor “Proveta” shines in a lyrical participation of his alto saxophone, only to be anchored by the piano of Mehmari, also acting as soloist. With the construction/ deconstruction of the bass and piano, the track acquires special density when joined by the two soloists.
The original Idea imagined by Baden Powell was maintained in É de Lei, partnership with Paulo César Pinheiro. A constant phrase on the beginning, started by the bass and the piano, is reinforced by comments by the wind section and the drums. The same phrase then becomes solid giving way to improvisation to the other instruments.
The choro, Da Bahia ao Ceará, and the classic, Coisa nº2, revisit Moacir Santos. The first is creatively executed by alternating instruments in what sounds like a humorous game between them, presenting the listeners on the opening track of the CD. The classic and, in its way, mysterious, Coisa nº2, its theme evolves through the wind section, anchored by the elegance of the trio of piano/bass/drums.
One of the less known compositions, Hermeto, by Hertemeto Pascoal, like the composition by Nailor “Proveta”, Vovô Manoel, allowing Stroeter, Moreno and Mehmari to create a modern and unique samba/ jazz, sometimes sharing winds as the base of the song and many times taking turns in solos. This can be heard in a beautiful moment when the improvisation of André Mehmari shines in Vovô Manoel.
The art of Ary Barroso is displayed in Inquietação, in an elegant and unique reinterpretation, where the integration of the musicians with each other is clearly noticeable. It is pure 21st century Brazilian music.
The “carioca” song writer and violinist, Joyce, does a special performance on a song written by her, called Feijão com Arroz, concluding the CD. Flavored in baião with modern colors, by the solid following of the trio and and for the wind section, a brilliant arrangement by Nailor “Proveta”.
Nonada is an example of maturity and understanding, fruit of the creativity of these musicians, which had as a goal the expansion of the already rich repertoire of instrumental Brazilian Music.
