Internationally acclaimed, Miguel Proença is one of the most highly regarded musicians in Brazil. His artistry has been eloquently praised for the past forty years both in Brazil and abroad. He has toured
worldwide as a soloist and a chamber musician, performing with Salvatore Accardo, Jean–Pierre Rampal,
Leonard Rose, Paul Tortelier, Aurèle Nicolet and Maria Lúcia Godoy. Miguel Proença recorded 25 CDs of
Brazilian music: Alberto Nepomuceno, Fructuoso Vianna and Lorenzo Fernandez, along with the hitherto
unreleased piano works by Ernesto Nazareth, Radamés Gnattali and Edino Krieger.
Recognized as the foremost interpreter of Villa-Lobos’ piano music - Mr. Proença’s recordings are distributed by Sony in Japan – he performed in the soundtrack of Zelito Viana’s film “VILLA-LOBOS”. As for his
international repertoire, Proença has recorded sonatas by Schubert and Chopin, as well as Chopin’s 24
Preludes and Brahms’s Sonatas for Vox Classics (Germany).
Miguel Proença has been Secretary of Culture of the City of Rio de Janeiro and Director of the
Cecília Meireles Concert Hall, as well as a jury member of numerous international competitions, such as
the Gina Bachauer in Salt Lake City, the Piano World Masters (Paris), Senigaglia (Italy), and José Iturby
(Spain) to name a few. His interest in aiding and promoting young musicians have led him into the creation
of projects which grant scholarships to Brazilian artists and students (APARTES) with the cooperation of
CAPES (Ministry of Culture), as well as the organization of master classes at Brazilian universities led by internationally
known professors (Performers Project). Miguel Proença teaches Music Culture at UERJ (State University of
Rio de Janeiro) and is the Artistic Director of both the UERJ-Classical Project and of the SESI Theater in
Porto Alegre. Between 1997 and 2002, he was guest professor at the Music Department of the University
in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Born in Rio Grande do Sul and raised in Rio de Janeiro, he was awarded “Pianist of the Year” (1989) and
Performer of the Year (1999) by São Paulo’s Art Critics Association. In 1991, the Brazilian government graced him
with the “Ordem do Rio Branco” for his outstanding contribution to music.
In 2003 performed recitals in France, Japan ,Slovenia, Italy and Germany.
Gave a very successful concert at Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater with the
Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra in The Pianists.
